Frederik Lieberath
Swedish photographer Frederik Lieberath (b. 1965) studied Art History and received a Masters degree in Photography at the National College of Art, Craft and Design in Stockholm before he moved to New York in 1993 and launched a career as one of the world’s foremost still life photographers. Lieberath is a true master of light and composition. Whether photographing lipsticks, cars, Apple products or exclusive watches his images are characterized by an almost clinical perfection. His action shoots of exploding balloons and flowers approaches the realms of scientific photography. With the help of high-speed cameras he captures events that are not visible to the naked eye; balloons filled with white powder that create cosmic constellations when they burst. Stunningly beautiful, these images leave us with a thrilling sense of the mysteries of the world – akin to Lennart Nilsson’s photographs of previously unseen microcosm and Harold Edgerton’s images of apples shot through with rifle bullets.
Lieberath’s work appears in major magazines, including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Velvet, Wallpaper, Esquire, Amica, D-Magazine, Bon and Stockholm New, just as his personal work has been exhibited at galleries around the world.
About The Work: “I was reaching for that moment of delay – from explosion to exposure where I would still have enough ballon left to tell the story of explosion while at the same time have a visual ambiguity and ambivalence. The spectator projects his or her own interpretations in the random shapes of waterdroplets and rubber. Eventually they draw their own conclusions as to what they are actually seeing.”
